Update on Andrew

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Jan 2002

Jan 23rd, Andrew went to the Mylo clinic today. He had a U/S done on his kidneys and we were told the kidneys reflux was done!!! We will go back in 6 months to have a CMG done with bladder filling. He wants us to write down the times and amount of urine at each cathing for a week's time before the testing. As for Ortho he was happy with Andrew's walking, his braces and was not concerned with the left foot that is turning out. He still thinks the hips look good but wants a x-ray in 6 months to have then re-checked along with Andrew's spine b/c he had the start of scoliosis. Ortho also wants Andrew in a year round school (meaning summer school) so he can receive PT . So all in all it was a good apt.

Feb 02

Andrew some how hurt his foot so I took him in for x-rays, it's not broken but the foot is bruised and need to stay off of it for a few day.

March 02

Andrew is learning to self cath!!! BIG news for us over here -he is DOING great!!! He started on April vacation one day, I still open all the items for him but he does the rest for him self....he's very happy and we are SO proud of him as well.

 April 02

Andrew was in his first ever science fair in kindergarten! I have pictures here. Andrew is doing well. But we do have a new IEP review on May 21st.

May 02

IEP review was a total waste of my time this time around! The 1st grade teacher was out sick and she was the one I wanted to talk to about next Sept. Summer school was a bust for Andrew too! Oh well he won't have summer school b/c he is doing so well, he's reading and doing well in math even learning Spanish. I did send the team notes from the SB mylo doctor and the Ortho which both stated that PT and OT was a must for the summer. So those we got, but I will have to drive him in for these. At first I was upset that he would not have summer school but it would only be for 4-6 weeks and I'd rather him be doing well enough not to be accepted then to need summer school right? :) I'm looking into maybe a swim class one a day a week. But he will get private PT all summer through my ins this was something the Ortho team wanted regardless of what the turkeys gave at the IEP.

June 02

June 14th was Andrew's graduation from kindergarten, then his last day was of school was June 20th. See a few pictures from graduation here.

July 02

Andrew started this month receiving respite care, Diane comes once a week to take him out for a few hour and he just loves her. She's a mom of 2 and has already worked with a child with SB so I feel totally good about her! Also at the Mylo clinic this month, Ortho wants to start Andrew on Botox shots to see if it helps release his tight his legs. If anyone's child with SB has had Botox injections PLEASE e-mail me to tell me how they have worked for your child, we would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Aug 02

Andrew would have started school this month but due to the middle school getting redone all the kids will start on Sept 9th this year!! Andrew got his new braces this month they are a lot like his last pair only that have the Pat's logo on them hee-hee.

Sept 02

Andrew is doing well in his 1st grade class. I've been very pleased with how the school has been able to get latex free items for his class and other rooms that he attends. Once again he has the best bus driver who is so willing to make the bus a latex free area for him, she made up letters to give to the other parents and has NO LATEX signs on her bus in case she is ever out, just a wonderful and caring person!

Oct  02

October is Spina Bifida Awareness month

I have been waiting to hear when we can get in to see the doctor to try these Botox shots, and found out that I can't get Andrew in to see him until some time the 1st of the year, I'm a very disappointed! ((Updated below))

Andrew turned 7 years old Oct 30th and got a new hair cut much shorter then usual check out his pictures here.

Halloween was really fun this year!!! See the boys picture here!

Nothing new

 Dec  02
((BOTOX injection info!!))

Andrew is doing well and had a great Christmas!! We got in to see the Ortho rehab doctor this month (after I called and BEGGED to get him seen)!!  Andrew will have Botox injections, she thought she could help him!! We are very excited to try these for him. April 15th 2003 Andrew will go in to have both legs done, his left leg will only need like 8-10 shots, but the right leg (his most problematic leg) will get 15-20 shots including his ankle then he will be casted for about 3 week. The Botox is done in the OR and they will put him to sleep but only for about 15 min they said. The thought is to relax his overly tight leg muscles and re-train his legs in better position.  He was also casted for a new brace, they called it a knee immobilizer  that he will wear only at night, to help stretch this leg before the Botox injections. We will pick that up in Jan and each week we have to increase the stretch from #1 to #7. To see picture click the link above.
