Update on Andrew

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month

Jan 2001

Jan 10th, Andrew went to the Mylo clinic today. He had a kidney U/S and saw Dr Bauer (Uro) his kidneys looked good and are the same size, will be seen again in 6 months. Andrew also had X-rays on his hips, we were there to set up surgery so he could get both hips done, as they were part way dislocated, but Ortho said that the hips looked like they had improved since our last apt which was in June 99. So NO hips surgery is needed at this time!!! We are VERY happy. We will have more X-rays done in 6 months time and I pray that they have improved even more and we can just skip this hip surgery all together, but if not at least my second son will be older, b/c that was my biggest worry if surgery was set up for Feb, then Shane would only have been 3 months old.

Feb 01

Nothing new to report!! Andrew is doing well, and enjoying his baby brother!

March 01

March 20 Andrew got new braces, they are still AFO's and are hinged at the ankles, but were made with the lining inside of them this time, that I don't like. Boy did we have a hard time finding sneakers for these braces. (Andrew no longer wears hinged AFO's see July 01's update for more info)

April 01

We had a meeting about getting the new school that Andrew will be starting this summer (for summer school then kindergarten) to be latex free as much as we can. The meeting went well. All the gloves in the school will be changed over to non-latex ones. Wish us luck at the IEP meeting set for May 2.

May 01

IEP meeting went fine, mostly talked to the "new" teacher about Andrew and the latex allergy. I think we scared her a bit but she was VERY nice and wanted Andrew to be as safe as could be while in her care.

June 01

Andrew Graduation from Pre-school this month. But will start summer school in another school in July, then start Kindergarten in Aug or Sept at a different school

July 01

6/9 Andrew started summer school, a school mini-van comes to get him and he goes 5 mornings from 8:15-12:30.

6/11 Took Andrew to the Mylo clinic for his 6 month visit. He got those hips x-rayed again and we got
GREAT NEWS....Andrew will NOT need hips surgery after all! We are still a bit in shock but back when all the talk about the hip surgery started (Dec 99) we were told he had a 2% chance to out grow the need for the hip surgery. It was not the best of odds but boy are we happy they were in his favor this time. We also got a new RX for some braces this time they will be SMO's much shorter and lighter weight and no hinges at the ankles. As soon as I get them I will take pictures and add them here.

Aug 01

I got the word that Andrew will start school Sept 5th, his Kindergarten teach is very nice and I have gone through the rooms checking for latex items. The school has been great about all the changes for Andrew and that I am happy for. Andrew is so excited to go back to school and a new school at that!

Sept 01

Andrew is having a great time in school, he has art coming to his class room to keep latex away, also he has Spanish , which he is LOVING! His one-to-one aid is new but ohhh so nice and he needed a change (it's been a great change). He is picked up on a min bus with kids all ages.

October is Spina Bifida Awareness month

Oct 01

On the 25th, Andrew and Shane were playing and Sane accidentally kicked Andrew in the eye and Andrew got a scratch on his cornea. He had to wear a patch for a couple of days and was very sad that he missed his first ever school field trip. I too was sad, but patching helped it heal faster and we got a lot of one-on-one time together which was nice...he's getting so big <sniff-sniff>

30th Andrew turned 6 today!!! He helped me make cupcakes and I took them to school for him to have a snack birthday party at school...it was fun!

31st was Halloween!!! Andrew picked to be a DOCTOR okay so maybe he gets to see to many doctors HAHA. He sure made a cute Doctor  complete with a beeper/pager and scrubs! I have a picture here. He a very nice job of walking  around but his favorite part was passing out the candy so he could talk to the kids (a social butterfly).

Nothing new to report!

Dec 01

Christmas was fun, Andrew had a great time b/c he got to unwrap all of his gifts plus Shane's too. Shane was not interested in it at all. I will post Christmas pictures in the Photo area. Andrew got a must wanted bike (a two wheel -but with the training wheels) but isn't quite strong to pedal it on his own yet, maybe by the summer time?? We'll see.
